New resources for community aged care workers

Workers who visit older people at home are well placed to notice when alcohol, medicines or other substances may be affecting someone’s health, falls risk or memory. A new page on the ASSIST Portal brings together practical resources to support those conversations.

The resources were developed by Adelaide University for AOD Prevention and Early Intervention for Ageing Queenslanders, a project funded by the Queensland Government through the Queensland Mental Health Commission. They accompany training delivered to community aged care workers in partnership with Queensland Primary Health Networks.

What’s available
- ASSIST-Lite for Older People: a fillable screening form with automatic scoring, and a feedback card covering risk levels, standard drinks and possible harms.

- Home Visit Practice Guide: an eight-step workflow, from noticing clinical clues to giving brief advice and documenting the plan.

- Opioid overdose in older people: recognising overdose in someone taking prescribed opioids, the DRSABCND response and how to give naloxone.

- Cultural considerations: discussing substance use with older people from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and working with interpreters and support people.

All resources are free to download individually or as a single ZIP file. The automatic scoring on the screening form works in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

New Resource for Older Persons: ASSIST-Lite Screening Tool Now Available!

Substance use issues among older adults often go undetected, yet they represent a growing concern that can significantly impact health outcomes and quality of life. Starting these conversations with older clients is crucial for prevention and intervention.

We're pleased to announce that the ASSIST-Lite form is now available on our portal—a specialised screening tool designed specifically for identifying alcohol and other drug problems in older populations. This streamlined resource features the structured ASSIST-Lite questionnaire to assess risk levels, followed by a brief intervention guide on the second page that helps you connect assessment findings with meaningful discussions about potential harms and next steps.

This tool can be used to empower healthcare providers to address substance use concerns with confidence, and ensure that older adults receive the support they need before problems escalate.

The updated form is available to download here and can be accessed/downloaded anytime by visiting our Portal at https://www.assistportal.com.au/resources/
